The Star Wars Celebration is almost over and the marketing train for the new Star Wars film has finally started. The release of the 1st trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit the internet and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. As a self proclaimed fan, I have now watched the trailer over 50 times just to catch glimpses of scenes and shots that will entice and excite me until December, when the film is released.

For this trailer Luke Skywalker takes the helm as narrator and seems to be training Rey on the remote planet of which The Force Awakens ends. From the tone of the trailer, The Last Jedi looks to focus heavily on Luke and Rey. A sort of Yoda and Luke relationship in the original trilogy. Mark Hamill’s somber voice introduces the new story of this wonderful universe. ‘BREATHE……’ Beautiful establishing shots of  Ireland and the harrowing score of John Williams. At this point I had goosebumps, I was ready to enter the Star Wars universe once again and then, all of a sudden, explosions of quick and fast cuts. Ship fights, explosions, Captain Phasma is back! Finn is still in a coma state, Kylo Ren, Poe Dameron ship exploding, a majestic desert shot of ‘hoverships’ (or maybe podracers?, one can dream) then we hear Luke Skywalker say, ‘its time for the Jedi……..(long dramatic pause) ……… to end.’ Cut to black, Christmas.

This is how a trailer should be. This showed enough without giving anything away. To show where Force Awakens left off is a perfect way to help the fans immediately come back to the universe of which they last entered just under 2 years ago. Then the quick and fast editing gives fans glimpses and plenty of bait to discuss, analyse and pick apart of what each scene means. This will allow hundreds of YouTube channels to speculate and predict what is going to happen in the next few months. Then the real end note of the trailer is that Luke Skywalker, the supposedly last Jedi, wants the Jedi to end! That is the talking point that fans will talk about to death till December. A brilliant way to market this film, keep the discussion and excitement going.

I don’t even need to see any more till December, the film is introduced and set up perfectly for me to enjoy it. I am hungry for more and that’s what a trailer should do. Again the Star Wars marketing train is in full force and it is so effective that this will once again look to break records.
